A journey to the area of Lago Agrio, in north-eastern Ecuador, in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. In the 1960s, the US-American company Texaco and the Ecuadorian government began extracting oil there. No consideration was given to damage to the environment or to the health of the indigenous population and the settlers, with whom the region was urbanized around the same time.
Donald Moncayo, an activist from Lago Agrio, offers guided tours for scientists, politicians, activists, tourists and journalists. During these “Toxic Tours”, he shows active and inactive boreholes, poisoned areas and huge flames. Meanwhile he tells the story of the region and explains the practices of the oil companies.
